Be A Man: Healthy Masculinity and Gender-Based Violence Curriculum
Monsoon’s project, “Be A Man: Masculinity Gender-Based Violence” is a student-led program intended to reduce harm by increasing students’ awareness about gender-based violence and its manifestation and to increase awareness about community resources for victims of gender-based violence. The core of this project is to deconstruct the harmful effects of masculinity that lead to mental health problems in men and violent behaviors against others. Our target audience is middle school boys in sports programs.

The program provides a workshop-style curriculum that will help normalize positive reinforcement on teams, teach boys to respect women and girls, and address topics such as fear of being seen as “feminine”, bullying, and coping mechanisms for mental health. We will take an intersectional approach to our curriculum on bullying, addressing how racial, gender and sexual identities play into masculinity, which we see as the bases for most bullying of boys. The methods will be taught through discussion, reflective journaling, shared stories, creative activities, and digital media.
Although Monsoon is a culturally-specific program serving Asians and Pacific Islanders (API) communities in Iowa, we believe it is important to be inclusive since the larger goal of this project is to target all youth athletes. Therefore, the program does not exclude non-color or non-binary individuals. This project is creating a safe space to discuss masculinity, sexual violence and dating violence, and how our culture/societal practices and beliefs on gender roles perpetuate rape culture. This project will provide youth participants with the tools and strategies in building their skills in building healthy relationships and most important, eliminating misogyny and ending gender-based violence.

2nd Annual Decolonizing Beauty: Anti-Fascist, Anti-BEauty Fashion Show
Today's youth are flooded constantly by images of what people "should" look like. These images are often representative of Eurocentric ideals: light-skinned, thin, big eyes...the list goes on. This mental image has negative effects on youth as they try to fit themselves to meet these arbitrary standards.

To combat the mainstream definition of beauty , which has come to exclude the beauty of many cultures, Monsoon organizes an annual fashion show. This year's event had the activities, discussion, and a cultural showcasing.
